First of all, the English language itself originated from the British Isle as part of Germanic language. It was brought in to America by the British colonizers. People say that America and Britain are “two nations divided by a common language” that is somewhat true as it is easier to point out the differences between both variant of English language, than pointing out the similarities. But that does not mean that there are no similarities at all, they are both still the same language. To back it up, they both have  identical morphology and syntax, that is words and sentences are made up of constituent parts in exactly the same way. Those things might be too complicated to explain, which is probably the reason why pointing out the differences are much more easier.

What the mass thinks as the most noticeable difference in both language variant are mostly the pronunciation, but otherwise, people who actually pays attention will see that both have different vocabulary and spelling In British English (BrE) which includes all English dialects used in United Kingdom, they like to use words such as “flats”, “loo”. Also have different spelling of the words “labour” or “flavour” even “analyse”. In British English, the collective nouns can be both plural and singular, Eg; “the team are playing tonight”  or “the team is playing tonight”

Which we can compare to the American English (AmE) which includes all English dialects used in the United States that the words “flats and loo” have never been used or rarely used there, which respectively means “apartment” and “bathroom/toilet”. Also the spelling of the words are different from British English as they would prever to spell the words without “u” something like “labour” becomes “labor” and they prever to use “z” in place of “s” which change the spelling of “analyse” into “analyze”. The collective nouns would also become one into plural and they only accept it as “the team is playing tonight”. Those are only the scratch and a surface of differences that you can find in the deep ocean of American and britihs English differences
